What a Mess – Where’s GOD?

Nowadays, no one is surprised by the statement, “What a mess!”  A global pandemic, financial hardships, losing loved ones, job losses, riots and shootings.

We ask, “Where is God?  Why did He let this happen?  Why doesn’t He help?”

These very same questions have been asked for hundreds, even thousands of years by people that were in the same circumstances as we are, some were in even worse circumstances.

From the beginning, when the human race got involved in decision making there have been wars, sickness, civil unrest, broken homes and more. The very same things that have come to us now came to previous generations, and they had the same question that some of us have, “Where is GOD?”  When we ask that question, it shows that something inside us knows that things should not be bad; somehow we know God is good and something is off when things are not good.

When Jesus came He started to shed light on things and to give us understanding on how things really work. The first few words of the Lord’s Prayer are “Our Father, who art in heaven…”  Now that is a great comfort, we have a Father who is in heaven; He is our creator, our maker.  Our Heavenly Father cares, and He rules from heaven and is able to help.

The bible is a long history of God helping His children.  Our part in all this is asking for the help. God is found when we seek Him and He helps whoever asks for help.

Perhaps the answer to the question, “Where is God?” is the same answer as it was in the previous generations. Remember that line from the Longfellow poem, “God is not dead nor doth He sleep,”?  (Read the poem here or watch the Casting Crowns version on YouTube).  That statement was true then.  When Longfellow realized that, he wrote about it.

Before Longfellow, generation after generation, bible verse after bible verse, the questions, “Where is God? Why won’t He help us?” were asked.  Many found the same answer, He is here with us and ready to receive and to help whoever calls to Him. Because of His great love for us, God is close to those that need help, the brokenhearted, the ones in trouble and any who are in need, and He wants us to hand over our cares and worries over to Him.
