HAPPY NEW YEAR! BUT IS ANYTHING NEW?

It’s another new year, and if you’ve lived long enough you know the drill: the new resolutions and promises to yourself, the “I’m going to do better this time.” New self-help books, Google searches and podcasts on how we can change and improve. But we probably have already failed at changing again and maybe we just give up. If we’re honest, we are desperate for a change, to be anything but us. Is there a way to truly change and to be happy with who God has called us to be?
The Bible tells us that we are all born into a creation that has become corrupted. We are all part of it and in fact the very fabric of our being is corrupted – Romans 5:12
This fallen nature of ours makes it impossible for us to truly change, it’s almost has if all our wiring is crossed. We can make a good effort at changing but after a couple weeks we usually fail, shrug our shoulders and go back to the way we were.
For some of us, the need to change goes beyond a New Year’s resolution, there is a constant need to change, to be different. No matter what we do or how we try to change there is a constant, nagging feeling deep inside that something is not quite right. But we can never put our finger on what exactly needs to change, what change will satisfy us?
It’s pretty evident that this brokenness isn’t just us, it’s worldwide, satan’s corrupted touch is everywhere and has been that way for a long, long time and he has no qualms about holding us captive to his kingdom 1 Peter 5:8. Sadly, we’re all born into his corrupted kingdom and there’s no escaping it on our own. That’s the reason why we find it impossible to truly change.
Gods answer for all this is not to give us more rules to follow to try and make us better, He knows that would never work, He knows how broken we are and we can never change on our own. Instead, God has put a plan into effect to create a brand-new perfect creation, a new Heaven, a new earth, – Isaiah 65:17-19 and all the people in this creation are also new creations. This is the only way for us to escape – Hebrews 2:3
Because of Gods great love for us, He , Himself came to fulfill the plan. When Jesus came, He started calling people to be a part of the new creation. Jesus, has the unique ability to give a person a new spirit inside them. “You must be born again” He said, – John 3:3-7 and when we allow Christ to do this, we become a new creation and we escape the control of satan – Colossians 1:13-14 and the corrupted old creation. – 2 Corinthians 5:17
Not only do we become brand new creations, but we also are ever changing into the person that God intended from the start. The bible says that we are transformed, to the glory He intended for us in the beginning. – 2 Corinthians 3:18. This is the true change that satisfies. And this new creation that is from God brings us eternal life, we will live in this new way forever with Him. – Revelation 21:3
For our part, all Jesus ask is for us to believe and to receive this gift of a new life. For some of us, this may seem pretty far fetched and hard to believe, why would God give such a gift without requiring something more from us? Jesus said that because of Gods deep amazing love for us – John 3:16 He is not counting or sins against us – 2 Corinthians 5:19 and He is pleased to give us His kingdom! – Luke 12:32
If you’re sick and tired of trying to fix the old broken person that you are, ask Christ to make you this new creation that He spoke about. – “for the old life is gone. A new life has begun!”
