FREE AS A BIRD

The expression “free as a bird” is both a wonderful expression and a wonderful feeling. But unfortunately the feeling is only temporary and before too long, just like gravity we’re dragged back down to earth.
Jesus said “So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” – John 8:36
But what has imprisoned us and how does Jesus set us free?
What Does Jesus Free Us From?
What did Jesus mean about setting us free, what do we need to be set free from?
Some would say they need to be free from a bad situation, some say they feel “trapped” by their job, where they live or their marriage. We can feel trapped by our lifestyle, addictions or just feeling like our life is a dead end.
But that trapped feeling is caused by something deeper than our situations. We aren’t trapped by our circumstances, we’re trapped because we have been imprisoned. We probably would never use the word imprisoned and maybe we would even bristle at the idea that we could ever be imprisoned. But if we took a hard honest look at our life, we would see something does have us, something we can’t break free from.
How did we end up imprisoned?
Adam’s Fall Imprisoned Us All
The Bible teaches that the whole world was throw into a fallen, corrupt state when Adam sinned. Through one mans actions the creation and man’s God given rule over it was handing over to satan – Romans 5:12 and every person since then has been born into this prison.
The whole world has become imprisoned but it’s not the type of prison that we usually think of. This prison is not a prison of bars and cells and high walls and it’s not the type of prison that you are sentenced to after being convicted of a crime and then released after you serve out your sentence. This prison is a prison of spiritual darkness, blindness and deception. Satan is called the deceiver of the whole earth – Revelation 12:9 and darkness and deception is his way of keeping the people of earth captive and there is no freedom from it unless someone intervenes on our behalf.
Freedom From the Prison. How Does Jesus Set Us Free
The only way to expel darkness is to shine light into it, the only way to break deception is with the truth.
Jesus said He is the light of the world – John 8:12. By that He meant that He is the spiritual light that dispels satan’s darkness.
The Bible says that the people living in darkness have seen a great light – Isaiah 9:2.
And that in Jesus is LIFE and that life was the LIGHT of men – John 1:4.
These verses all mean that Jesus’s character, His very nature brings life and light to people and they are set free because of it.
The mission of Christ is to set the imprisoned captives free:
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come” – Luke 4:18
Do you want to be free as a bird…permanently? Ask Jesus to make you free!
